Did you know a lot of personal care products contain plastic microbeads which end up in our waterways and can be eaten by sea life?
With so many great natural exfoliating options available like coffee, oats, walnut shells, sugar and natural clays why do we need microbeads? Products like toothpaste, body wash, face wash and cosmetics like nail polish and lip gloss use micro beads as a bulking agents or for exfoliation. The tiny particles aren't usually captured by conventional wastewater treatment plants and many of them end up in rivers and oceans.
One a 150mL tube of facial scrub can contain as many as 2.8 million beads! Microbeads are commonly made from the following substances, so look out for these ingredients on the back of products:
- Polyethylene (PE)
- Polypropylene (PP)
- Polyethylene terephthalate (PET)
- Polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA)
- Nylon (PA)
Always read the label before you buy a product, and when buying online if the ingredients aren't listed you can always send an inquiry. For natural skin care you can trust check out our range of microbead free, palm oil free, cruelty free and plant based products!
